Moving Tips: The Practical Alberta Move-in Checklist

S Svetlana · eXp Realty Last updated September 17, 2026 7 min read

Moving to Alberta involves a few steps that are easy to miss: health coverage is not automatic, your licence exchange has a deadline, and utilities need a week's notice. This checklist lays out the practical side of a Calgary move in the order it actually needs to happen, so nothing important is forgotten and the last days stay calm.

Neatly labeled moving boxes and a potted plant in a bright sunlit room.
A calm move is a planned move: boxes labeled, services lined up, essentials at hand.

Do the health card first

Alberta health coverage under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) does not start on its own. You apply within three months of moving, and coverage for most movers from other provinces begins on the first day of the third month after you establish residency, so there is a real waiting period. Register early through a registry agent and keep the confirmation. It is the single most important first step.

Licence, registration, and address changes

New Alberta residents must exchange an out-of-province driver's licence within 90 days of moving, and must update licence and vehicle registration within 14 days of a change of address. These happen at private registry agents around the city. On the same visit you can usually handle AHCIP paperwork and other registry services, so one trip covers a lot.

Set up utilities a week ahead

In Calgary, ENMAX is the default provider and sends one consolidated bill for electricity, water, sewer, and waste. Natural gas is separate. Call at least a week before move-in, and be ready for a deposit of roughly three months of estimated bills if you are new to the country with no Canadian credit history. Budget for it, and ask about payment plans.

Hire movers with your eyes open

Reputable moving companies in Calgary are licensed, insured, and happy to quote a written binding estimate. Be wary of low-ball quotes, cash-only payments, large deposits, and unbranded trucks, and check reviews on more than one platform. A solid estimate in writing removes most of the stress from the biggest service you will book for the move.

The week-by-week move timeline

  • Before move-in Set up utilities with ENMAX (electricity, water, sewer, waste) and a natural gas provider at least a week ahead; expect a deposit without Canadian credit history.
  • Day of arrival Apply for AHCIP health coverage at a registry agent within three months, and start it early: most newcomers face a short waiting period.
  • Within 14 days Update your address for your driver’s licence and vehicle registration at an Alberta registry agent; Alberta law requires it.
  • Within 90 days Exchange an out-of-province driver’s licence for an Alberta one; registration happens at private registry agents, not government offices.
  • First weeks Set up mail forwarding, and update your bank, employer, CRA, and other accounts with your new address.
  • Keep calm Book movers with a written binding estimate, check reviews, and keep one bag of essentials with you on moving day.

The paperwork behind the boxes

Mail forwarding through Canada Post, then your bank, employer, CRA, insurance, and any memberships: keep a simple list and work through it on your first weekend. None of it is hard, but all of it quietly rewards doing it early. If you are buying, the closing paperwork, inspections, and handover details have their own rhythm, and that is exactly where an agent's checklist earns its keep.

The essentials bag

Pack one bag with your ID, lease or ownership documents, health card, chargers, medication, and a change of clothes, and keep it with you on moving day. When everything else is in boxes, that bag is what makes the first night feel fine.
